Do you know the quote “If not now, when?” This quote has helped me to leave my job as a lawyer and step into my purpose. In this blog, I’ll explain how it helped me and how it can also help you.
A burned-out lawyer
A few years ago I was working as a lawyer. I went to law school and I thought that being a lawyer was going to make my life amazing. Unfortunately, it didn’t. I was miserable in my job. The legal world was too harsh for me. I had bosses who would make me feel small and not good enough on a daily basis. Also, the harshness of the legal world, triggered old childhood trauma’s, which didn’t make life easier.
At some point, the misery and pressure got too much for me and I got burned out.
Through EMDR trauma therapy, yoga, mindfulness, and conscious living I got better. At some point in my healing process, I had to ask myself if I wanted to go back to the legal world where I was so unhappy.
My therapist made me realize that I would probably always get triggered in hierarchical environments like the legal world. Chances of me ever being fully happy as a lawyer were slim.
I found myself at a crossroads of staying or leaving my legal job. And then I remember this quote:
“ if not now, when?”
I realized that deep down, I always knew that one day I was going to start my own business. I didn’t know what, when or how. But I did know that it wasn’t going to be a law firm.
This period of my life was the perfect time for me to take the leap. If I wasn’t going to do it now that the timing was perfect, when was I going to do it?
With this quote in my head, I grabbed all the courage I had, I left my job as a lawyer and I started my own business.
If not now, when?
Maybe you’re also at a crossroads right now. And maybe deep down you know that you’re not on the right path. Is there a dream in your heart that you’d like to follow? Is there a desire in your belly to turn over a new leave? Is your intuition telling you that it’s time to move on?
If so, why not follow that dream, feeling, call of your soul? Why not leap and see where the wind will take you?
My dear friend, if you’re not going to take the leap now, when will you do it?
Your situation won’t change until you take action. Why not get an action mode now? Why not take control of your life today and change your reality?
I really hope that this quote can give you the same courage and strength that it has given me to change your life.
