One of the scariest things I have ever done was leaving my legal job. For the longest time, my job was my security ticket. My biggest reason to study law, was because I thought that it would give me the security I needed. A good career with great status, a roof over my head, enough money in the bank to buy me everything my heart desires.
My legal job ended up giving me most of those things. But it didn’t make me happy. Better yet, most of the times, it made me miserable. At first, I wasn’t even aware of the fact that I was feeling so lousy because my job was sucking the life out of me. It wasn’t until I got burned-out that I realized that me and my job weren’t a good fit and that I should find something else to do. ASAP!
Coming to this realization was extremely scary. I had always identified myself with my job. Who was I if I wasn’t practicing law? Although I did not have an answer to that question at the time, I was willing to find out. It took me all the courage that I had to leave my legal career, but boy oh boy, I am so happy that I did.
If there is a little voice inside you that is telling you it might be time to leave your job, I would take it seriously. It is your inner guidance system that is telling you it is time to step into your light and create the life of your dreams. Because I know how scary it is to listen to that voice and to take that leap of faith, I have three steps for you that will help you find the courage to listen to your inner knowing and leave your job.
1. Know how you want to feel
The first step is to know how you want to feel. I say this because having a goal is one thing, but if that goal isn’t ultimately going to make you happy, there is no point in going after it. To get clear on what it is that you want to get out of leaving your job, you need to know how it is that you want to feel.
Your current state is probably how you don’t want to feel: miserable, burned-out, exhausted, uninspired, scared, overwhelmed, underappreciated, not in the right spot, you name it.
So just close your eyes and begin to feel how you do want to feel. How will you feel when you find that job that is in full alignment with your purpose? Does it bring a smile to your face? What about this is making you feel good? Why does it feel good? Write this down in your journal.
This feeling is something that you are gonna wanna hold on to. If fear or doubt start to creep in, you can always check-in with how you want to feel, so you will be driven to take steps forward, in order to manifest that feeling in your reality.
2. Create an action plan
It is really that you have a step by step action plan in place, so you know what to do and when. When do you want to leave your job? What do you need to make this happen? Do you need to save money and if so, how much, do you need to talk to your partner or family, do you need to hire a coach so you can get clear on your goals?
Having an action plan will make leaving your job so much easier because you know what is coming. The reason why most people feel scared when thinking about leaving their job is that they don’t have that step by step action plan. If you have a plan and you exactly know what you want to do and when it will be less scary and you limit the chance of getting overwhelmed.
You can always download my free goal planner if you need any help with creating your action plan.
3. Just do it!
No matter when you take that leap, it is always going to be scary. And you know what, that is a good sign! If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough!
Once you do it, you will realize that a lot of your fears were unjustified. There was no reason to be scared in the first place. As soon as you take that leap to leave your job, you will soon be on the other side of fear, and you won’t be scared anymore. Your fear will be behind you.
So, know how you want to feel, create your action plan, just do it and start creating the life of your dreams!
